CONSUMER AFFAIRS Unit of the Ministry of Commerce is currently conducting a survey on goods prices at the shops in Honiara. Director for Consumer Affairs Oliver Jino told Island Sun his office is responding to complaints the five percent appreciation did not have any impact on food prices.
“We employed part time inspectors to do the survey for us because the government never employs any inspector to collect and compare the food prices in the shops,” Jino said.
He said inspectors are carrying out the survey to make comparison on food prices since they announced the five percent appreciation of the Solomon dollar.
Mr Jino said it’s the first survey done since the announcement as most complaints and queries being forwarded through his office.
“This is to help us be in a good position to respond to the complaints,” he added
He said complaints from the public suggested food prices remained the same before and after the appreciation of the dollar.
Mr Jino predicted the five percent appreciation will have an impact in the local economy in the next two to three months.
“It will take time to be effectively impacted on the economy,” he added
