The Malaita provincial government yesterday stepped in to assist in solving the problem with Gwaunaruú Airport.
Gwaunaru’u Airport had been closed down end of last month due to landowners’ (LO) disappointment over outstanding aircraft operational fees.
Premier for Malaita Province Edwin Suibaea said the closure had affected the general public mainly the political and business activities in the province.
The premier stressed that about hundreds of people were affected by the closure as the Gwaunaru’u airport serves the East, Central and Northern region in Malaita Province Seeing the need to urgently address the issue Mr Suibaea yesterday had arranged to talk with landowners. “I will talk with them today afternoon (yesterday).”
He said this is to allow the provincial Government to see ways on how to negotiate with landowners and the civil aviation on the issue.
He added the problem has also put pressure on shipping services in the province in which their services cannot cater for the traveling public, traveling in and out of the province.
The premier had called upon the National Government to step in and quickly look into the issue as Malaita Province is greatly affected.
